You Are the Man
Sin often seems to go unnoticed, and the longer nothing happens, the more careless we get. In this Wednesday night study, Pastor Brian Mathews walks through 2 Samuel 12. Months have passed since David took Bathsheba and had Uriah killed, and David may well believe he got away with it. Then the Lord sends Nathan the prophet with a story about a rich man who took a poor man’s only lamb. David burns with anger at the man, until Nathan holds up the mirror: “You are the man.” Pastor Brian shows how the “traveler” in Nathan’s story is sin. Once we open the door, it settles into the guest room and then takes over the whole house. God reminds David of everything He had given him, and calls his sin what it is: despising the word of the Lord. David repents, and God forgives him. But the consequences remain, because we choose our choices, not our consequences, and sin never happens in a vacuum. The call is to take sin seriously and turn back to the Lord quickly. When God calls out our sin, it is a loving thing, and the best thing that can happen to a sinner is not getting away with it while there is still time to repent. Even when we pay a price for our sin, God will never leave us nor forsake us.
