What If David Came to Church?
If David walked through the doors of our church today, knowing everything he had done and knowing God had forgiven him, how would we treat him? In this Wednesday night study, Pastor Brian Mathews opens with that question before walking through the rest of 2 Samuel 12. God forgave David’s sin, but He did not shield him from the consequences: the child born to Bathsheba grows sick and dies. David fasts and pleads with the Lord for seven days. When the child is gone, he rises, washes, and goes into the house of the Lord to worship. Then comes one of the most surprising turns in Scripture. From a relationship that began in adultery and murder, God gives David and Bathsheba a son named Solomon, and through his line the Messiah would come. Pastor Brian reminds us that no one is too far gone to be forgiven, and that refusing to forgive ourselves sets our standard above God’s. As Augustine put it, David’s fall should put those who have not fallen on their guard and save from despair those who have. The call is to push in toward God when things are hard, not pull back, and to be a church that treats the forgiven as fully restored. Every one of us is part of the greeting ministry.
