The Sin You Don’t Kill
Have you ever tried to show someone kindness, only to have them take it the wrong way? In this Wednesday night study, Pastor Brian Mathews walks through 2 Samuel 10. David sends servants to comfort Hanun after his father’s death, but Hanun’s insecure counselors convince him that David has sent spies. Hanun humiliates David’s ambassadors, and a war begins that is built entirely on bad information. Along the way, Pastor Brian reminds us that we are ambassadors for Christ, and how we carry ourselves reflects on the King. He points back to the cave of Adullam, where David’s mighty men began as the distressed, the indebted, and the discontented. God trained them through trial after trial, and He forms and fashions us the same way. The warning comes at the end. Joab lets the Ammonites retreat to their city without finishing the fight, and that unfinished business sets the stage for David’s fall in chapter 11. As Spurgeon said, the sin you do not kill will kill you. Pastor Brian calls the church to guard their hearts most carefully when life is good, to filter what they take in, and to pick up the sword of the Word daily.
