No Oasis for the Christian
Most people know David for two stories: David and Goliath, and David and Bathsheba. In this Wednesday night study, Pastor Brian Mathews walks through 2 Samuel 11, where the man after God’s own heart falls at the height of his success. It was spring, “the time when kings go out to battle,” but David stayed in Jerusalem. One evening on the rooftop led to adultery, deception, and finally the death of Uriah the Hittite, one of David’s own mighty men. Uriah was so loyal that even when David got him drunk, he still wouldn’t go home while his brothers were in the field. Pastor Brian is clear about two things. God is not casual about serious sin, and God is merciful. You cannot out-sin God’s forgiveness, but sin never happens in a vacuum. It carries consequences, and the rest of David’s story will show them. The oasis of life is where we drop our guard, and there is no oasis for the Christian. Like a boxer with a fight on the calendar, we are called to stay battle-ready, keep our hands up, and keep the sword of the Spirit close.
