When Doing a Good Thing Isn’t God’s Will (2 Samuel 7)

August 19, 2026 · 2 Samuel 7

In 2 Samuel 7, David reaches a moment of peace and blessing after years of conflict. With the Ark of God now in Jerusalem, David wants to do something good for God—build Him a permanent house. But there’s a problem: David never actually asked God what He wanted. In this study, we look at David’s desire to honor God, Nathan’s initial response, and God’s correction. Along the way, we consider an important truth for every believer: we can have good intentions, do something that seems right, and still be outside of God’s will. We’ll explore what it means to genuinely seek God, how Scripture reveals His will for our lives, why our feelings and plans cannot be allowed to “drive the car,” and what David’s story teaches us about trusting God rather than assuming our plans are His plans. If you’re encouraged by this study, consider subscribing and joining us as we continue working through Scripture together.
