A Seat at the King's Table

Pastor Brian Mathews · October 2, 2026 · 2 Samuel 9

Godly character is formed in small things nobody else sees. In this Wednesday night study, Pastor Brian Mathews opens with the call to keep repenting as believers, because when we're alone with the Lord, every justification falls away. From there the study turns to 2 Samuel 9. David is established on his throne, and he has every reason to forget the house of Saul. Instead he asks, "Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him?" The answer is Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son, who is crippled in both feet and living in Lo-debar. He comes before the king expecting death. David tells him, "Do not fear," restores his grandfather's land, and gives him a permanent seat at the king's table. Pastor Brian draws out the picture of the gospel. Mephibosheth was blessed because of a covenant made with his father, not because of anything he had done, and we come to God's table the same way, because of the Son. The call is to be people whose word can be trusted, who show kindness when nobody is watching, and who reach out to those still hiding from the King. We received grace we didn't deserve, so we can bless others who don't deserve it either.
